Jiri Nosková (Early 20th Century)

In the 1970s and early 1980, an Austrian woman had a gallery in Dania, Florida, from which she sold works of art, mostly drawings and watercolors, that had come from various artists’ studios in Vienna and which she and her husband had brought with them when the emigrated to the United States. Some of the pieces were signed by Viennese artists from late in the 19th and early in the 20th century, including Ignaz Schônbrunner (1835-1921), Rudolf Hermann (1879-1963), Raphaël Kirchner (1876-1917), and others. Turn-of-the-century Vienna had a vibrant artistic community that produced some of the most important artists of the early 20th century, as well as a host of interesting and accomplished minor ones. This drawing from life came from her gallery. Nosková was probably an artist of Czech origin who worked in Vienna in the 1930s. He was obviously a skilled draughtsman with academic training.
